Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable phone, reportedly dubbed the iPhone Ultra, later this year. It may have a wide form factor. The company is apparently going all in with its efforts to make it completely crease-free. On the sidelines, despite the technical hurdles, the tech giant is still reportedly working on a large foldable iPad. According to a new leak, the foldable iPad may feature the same crease-free hinge design as the iPhone Ultra.
Apple’s foldable iPad may share the hinge design with the upcoming iPhone Ultra
The source of the leak is a Weibo-based tipster, Digital Chat Station. He suggests that Apple’s foldable iPad will create a new market for big folding tablets. That said, a report in July last year said that Apple had paused working on the larger foldable iPad owing to development issues, but Bloomberg reported in March that the project is still moving forward.
As per Bloomberg’s previous report, while Apple wanted to launch the device in 2028, issues with its weight and display technology are likely to cause it to be moved back to 2029. Apple’s foldable iPad may feature a Samsung-made 18-inch display. It may blur the line between Mac and iPad. That said, there are concerns about its practicality when it comes to typing.
The device may not launch anytime soon
When folded, the iPad apparently resembles a MacBook, with an aluminum exterior and no outer display. When opened, it unfolds to roughly the size of a 13-inch MacBook Air, albeit without a physical keyboard. Courtesy of its large display and aluminum chassis, current prototypes reportedly weigh around 3.5 pounds/1.58 kgs, which will make it significantly heavier than the existing iPad Pro models.
While that’s about the technicalities, the 18-inch OLED foldable iPad will definitely be expensive, considering the 13-inch iPad Pro itself costs $1,299. If the component prices don’t come down in the coming few years, the foldable iPad may reportedly cost as much as $3,900, which is quite steep for a regular buyer.
Meanwhile, the iPhone Ultra is likely to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in the fall this year. However, a recent supply chain leak says it may face a delay due to hinge reliability problems.
