Fitbit wearables are widely used for health tracking purposes. One of the few things it is known for accurately tracking is sleep. However, in the last few days, several users have complained about Fitbit showing worse sleep stats, despite maintaining the same level of sleep quality. Turns out, the company had secretly updated its sleep tracking algorithm to deliver even more accurate results.
Your Fitbit can now do sleep tracking more accurately
For users getting worried about the deteriorating sleep quality measurement by Fitbit, don’t worry; it’s not you. Fitbit has rolled out a new update to improve its sleep tracking algorithm. The update was rolled out very quietly, and hence no one was able to point out the reason for the change in sleep quality.
In its support document, Fitbit has confirmed that it has redesigned its sleep tracking system. It says that the updated algorithm will provide “more precise measurement” of your sleep. It now tracks the brief awakening during your sleep, which the old algorithm used to miss.
The algorithm now detects brief awakenings during sleep
Since the Fitbit’s algorithm now does sleep tracking more accurately, this was the reason why several users had noticed a dip in their sleep quality index, despite no actual change in the sleep schedule.
As the new system detects the brief awakening during sleep, your awakening time will increase. And this will subsequently reflect on your sleep quality index. Since the index now includes more of your total awakening time, it’s natural for the system to say that your sleep quality is getting worse. It is just doing its job with much more honesty.
Furthermore, Fitbit says that this is one of the first updates in a series of sleep-tracking improvements. This means that it could roll out more updates to the tracking algorithm in the coming weeks. After all, Fitbit wants its watch to stand next to the Google Pixel Watch.
