Mozilla is preparing a major update for its Firefox browser, introducing a free VPN and several productivity tools. The new upgrades will be delivered with Firefox 149, which is scheduled for an official release on March 24. The new built-in VPN removes the need for third-party tools. It will offer a seamless way to protect data, hide identity, and browse safely across supported regions worldwide.
Firefox’s new update will add a free VPN service
The new VPN feature in Firefox will work directly within the browser. Once activated, it will route the user traffic through a secure proxy to mask IP addresses and locations. This built-in approach eliminates the need to download external VPN software or subscribe to paid services. Mozilla says that this tool aligns with its long-standing privacy principles. It aims to provide a trustworthy alternative to many free VPN options that may involve hidden risks or unclear data practices.
However, the VPN service does come with certain restrictions. At launch, it will only be available in select regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Users will also face a monthly data cap of 50GB. While this limit is sufficient for everyday browsing, such as checking emails or reading news, it may be enough for heavy activities like streaming or file downloads.
New productivity feature aims to boost user experience
Apart from the free VPN service, Firefox 149 will add several new tools designed to improve productivity and user control. One of the standout additions is Split View. The feature will allow users to view two web pages side by side within a single window. Further, it supports multitasking and aims to enhance workflow efficiency.
Additional features include Tab Notes for quick in-browser note-taking and a Smart Window tool powered by optional AI features. These tools can summarize content and provide quick definitions. However, to maintain its privacy standards, the users are given full control over opt-in settings.
