Owning a Ferrari F40 is a distant fantasy for most petrolheads, thanks to the skyrocketing prices of this iconic Maranello supercar in recent years. But if you’re not above pretending to be someone you’re not, and you’re okay with pulling the wool over the eyes of those who can’t tell the difference, there’s always the option of a budget replica. For the bold, one such F40 impersonator is up for grabs in France.
At first glance, the model looks like a full-scale version of the often unlicensed Ferrari-inspired plastic toys from the ’90s. However, a closer look at the greenhouse reveals the rather unconventional donor vehicle that lies underneath the custom bodykit.

Instead of being based on a Pontiac Fiero, the car of choice for most replica creators, this one is built around a second-gen Audi TT from 2010. Besides the greenhouse, pillars, and roof section, it retains the doors, mirrors and fuel cap of the German coupe. Everything else has changed and the wannabe supercar features significantly longer front and rear overhangs.
F40 Vibes, Sort Of
The front end tries hard to resemble the F40 with similar bumper and headlights, although we don’t know whether the popup units actually work. As for the bulge on the hood which is surrounded by NACA ducts, it might have been necessitated by the fact that the engine still resides in front of the passenger cell, rather than behind it like in the real thing.
Even so, despite the lack of a twin-turbo V8 filling up the space available, the rear end is somewhat closer to the original. The model features the iconic rear wing of the F40, albeit with T32 lettering on the sides; guess whoever built this doesn’t want to hear from Ferrari’s lawyers, and we can’t blame them…
It also gets triple exhaust pipes, quad round taillights, and four fake vents on the rear fenders. The latter are notably wider than stock, matching the wider tracks and tires.

The seller didn’t share photos of the interior, which likely remains stock. This means that the F40 impersonator has a 2+2 seating layout, offering a practicality advantage over the original. The only problem is the limited access to the cargo area due to the extra bodywork at the back.
Interestingly, the donor Audi is fitted with the 3.2-liter TFSI V6 that was available at the time and is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and the quattro all-wheel-drive system. The six-cylinder mill produces 247 hp (184 kW / 250 PS) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque in stock form, preceding the more powerful TTS and TTRS that came with turbocharged, and more powerful, four- and five-cylinder engines respectively.
Want to Buy it?
The Audi-based F40 replica is located in the Taradeu region of southeastern France, and is offered on Facebook marketplace for a non-negotiable price of €14,999 ($17,300). This amount sounds a bit too much for what this thing is, but since two examples of the genuine Ferrari F40 changed hands for over €3.5 million ($4 million) earlier this year, if it rocks your boat, then this TT-turned-Ferrari-legend-wannabe is probably a bargain.
