Ever since Donald Trump took the seat as the President of the US, he has been going all out with the tariffs. He had announced reciprocal tariffs for almost all the countries the US trades with. The administration has now imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports. This could negatively affect the iPhone 17’s launch.
Trump announces a total of 50% tariff on Indian imports
President Trump had recently imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports. During his first wave of reciprocal tariffs, India got hit by a 25% tariff rate. The newly announced tariff rates will take effect from August 27th. This means that imports from India will now have to pay a total of 50% tariff rate. The administration says that the additional tariff is a result of India’s import of Russian Oil.
Now, how this will affect the global supply chain remains to be seen. However, things are not looking good for Apple, as it had plans to completely shift its iPhone manufacturing units from China to India. A large portion, as much as 40%, of the iPhones sold in the US are imported from India. The company even had plans to manufacture all the iPhones sold in the US in India.
iPhone 17 launch may face hurdles because of the additional tariff
Trump doesn’t want Apple to manufacture in India. He had also made it clear to Apple that his administration wants the company to manufacture locally in the United States. As a result, Apple announced its plan to invest an additional $100 billion in the region and plans to set up a local manufacturing unit.
As of right now, a total of 14% of iPhones sold worldwide are manufactured in India. The number is expected to go as high as 25% by the end of the year. Now that we are nearing the launch of the iPhone 17 series, the additional tariff imposed by the Trump administration might create some hurdles for the devices.
