The clock is ticking for the V8 engine. The recent loss of the gas-powered Charger and Challenger, as well as the discontinuation of the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 dealt major blows to the long-term likelihood of the V8 sticking around much longer. Though new V8s continue to arrive and push performance boundaries (Corvette ZR1, we’re looking at you), most of these are low-volume units fitted to six-figure cars. On the more affordable side of the market, there’s a growing likelihood that your next 300 to 500 horsepower vehicle will be a four or six-cylinder, or fully battery-powered.
