There aren’t that many companies in the world that are capable of manufacturing semiconductors. TSMC comes to mind, along with Samsung and Intel. But considering how many devices out there rely on semiconductors, it’s surprising there aren’t more. But now, it looks like Elon Musk has tossed his hat into the ring and announced plans for his own chip manufacturing facilities.
Elon Musk wants to get into chip manufacturing
In a recent report from Bloomberg, it seems that Elon Musk has recently shared his own chip manufacturing plans. This was revealed during an event on Saturday night in downtown Austin Texas. According to Musk’s plans, he’s calling it the “Terafab” facility. It will also be built near Tesla’s Austin headquarters.
Now, before you think that Musk is planning to compete against TSMC and the likes, that’s not the goal. At least not for now. Instead, Musk says that this facility will be used for his other business ventures such as Tesla and SpaceX. His reasoning is that at the moment, semiconductor manufacturers aren’t producing fast enough for his demands. “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.”
Ambitious, but can he pull it off?
That being said, we should point out that building a semiconductor manufacturing facility is extremely ambitious. It is also a reason why there aren’t that many manufacturers in the world, because it’s not easy and it’s costly.
In order to produce semiconductors, companies need to use EUV lithography machines. These machines are essentially made by only one company in the world, ASML, which is based in the Netherlands. These machines cost nearly half a billion, which means it’s a long-term commitment. They also require specialized engineers to run them.
Due to US President Trump’s tariffs, we’ve seen companies like TSMC and Samsung announce plans to set up shop stateside, but even then, it will be a while before they can scale up. This means assuming all goes to plan, Musk’s plans could take a while to realize.
As Bloomberg notes, Musk does not have a background in semiconductor manufacturing. However, he has been known to make bold claims and moves. Whether or not he’ll be able to deliver remains to be seen.
