Construction of the early phases of the Stargate Project in Abilene is underway, with parts of the facility already up and running. The city about 150 miles west of Fort Worth is where the planned 1.2-gigawatt data center will be the first step in the Stargate Project, a $500 billion, four-year effort to develop massive data centers to create AI solutions across the country. Tech giants Oracle and OpenAI are helming the project.
The Dallas Business Journal reports that Oracle began delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks, which are used specifically in heavy-duty AI infrastructure. Once the facility is complete by mid-2026, the full campus will span eight buildings across nearly 4 million square feet. The job will be a significant economic development engine for the area, with thousands of roles already open in Abilene.
OpenAI said that more roles are expected to open as construction continues, including jobs for electricians, equipment operators, and technicians.
