Google is unfortunately still selling the Pixel 9 Pro with just 128GB of storage at its base price. Now, Google does offer 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB models. However, not every color is available in all four storage sizes. For example, the 1TB Pixel 9 Pro is only available in the Obsidian colorway. This could be an issue down the road, as AI begins to use more and more storage on these phones. So, does the Google Pixel 9 Pro have an SD card slot?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. And this shouldn’t come as a surprise. In fact, Google was the first to axe SD card slots from its phones, way back in 2011. The last Google phone to support an SD card was the Nexus One back in 2010. So this should not be a surprise at all.
These days, most phones do not support SD card slots, and a big reason for this is the speed. A lot of SD cards are far slower than the internal storage of smartphones, which means putting apps on the SD card would make your experience worse, as some apps would load slower than others.
Today, there are very few phones that have an SD card slot; in fact, it’s really only Sony, and some Motorola and Samsung devices like the Galaxy XCover 7 Pro, and the Motorola G Power 5G (2025), to name a few.
For most people, the 128GB and 256GB storage models should be plenty. However, we do recommend that if you’re planning to keep this phone for several years, you go with the larger storage variant, if you can afford it. Keep in mind that Google is planning to support the Pixel 9 for 7 years, which means it’ll still be getting updates in 2031. And you really don’t want to have to deal with “Storage Low” issues for that many years.
Google’s Files app does make it easier to clean up your storage, however. By clearing out the cache, removing large files like videos and photos that are already backed up to Google Photos, and much more. It should be installed by default on your Pixel 9, but if you did remove it, you can easily get it back from Google Play.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro release date was on August 22, 2024. And we expect the Google Pixel 10 release date to be similar in 2025.
