NRG Energy is building an electric power generation plant to be constructed at the existing NRG Greens Bayou facility in Harris County. The new 455-megawatt natural gas facility represents $617 million in capital investment.
The 455-megawatt facility received a $370 million Texas Energy Fund loan from the Public Utility Commission of Texas in November.
The plant is expected to begin generating power for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power region in 2028.
The new plant is the sixth to be built through a new Texas Energy Fund (TxEF) loan agreement and the third TxEF agreement announced with NRG. Last summer, NRG signed a 295-MW contract to serve data center operators in Central Texas. Besides the data center requirements, the new gas plant will power about 110,000 homes.
