The Public Building Commission of Chicago has approved $29 million for the city’s first regional senior center on the South Side.
A request for proposal will be issued for a design-build firm for the two-story, 25,000-square-foot building at 4711–55 S. Calumet Ave. in Bronzeville, reported the Chicago Business Journal. Funding for the project includes $16 million from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and $13 million in tax increment financing from the city of Chicago.
The center will be built on vacant, city-owned land one block from the 47th Street Green Line train station. The Chicago Department of Family & Support Services will operate the facility, which will feature 38 parking spaces, office and event space, and a fitness room.
The site, which had been vacant for a decade, was previously a grocery store. The senior center will occupy half of the block, and a separate development that could include housing will occupy the other half.
