Reading a 5,000-word technical report in a narrow chat window has never been the most comfortable experience. OpenAI is addressing this head-on by launching a full-screen document viewer for ChatGPT‘s Deep Research feature. With this update, the company’s AI tool is closer to being a professional research assistant than just a conversational bot.
ChatGPT’s new Document Viewer makes it easy to navigate Deep Research reports
The new interface separates the final report from the standard chat flow, offering a clean, dedicated space for reading. OpenAI added a table of contents to the left-hand column to make it easier to find your way around. This lets you go straight to certain parts without endless scrolling. On the right side, a special panel shows all the sources and citations used, which makes it much easier to check the information.
Beyond just looking better, the tool is now more functional. Users can see how their research is going in real time and even change the direction or scope while the AI is still “thinking.” Once the report is ready, you can export the final document in various formats. The list includes PDF, Word, and Markdown.
Directing the research process
One of the most practical additions is the ability to guide ChatGPT toward specific websites or connected apps. Instead of letting the AI browse the open web at random, you can now focus its attention on trusted sources, peer-reviewed journals, or specific industry databases. This level of control is a game-changer for academics and analysts who need high-quality, credible data rather than general summaries.
The research process itself remains thorough. It takes the system a few minutes to break down a complicated question, check claims against several sources, and put the results together into a coherent narrative. With these new controls, you can essentially program the AI’s methodology before it even starts its web crawl.
Availability
OpenAI is currently rolling out these improvements to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. The company did say, though, that free users and those on the new ChatGPT Go tier will also get these research updates in the next few days.
