OpenAI is rolling out the first significant update to ChatGPT Atlas, its dedicated AI browser. Currently, the app is only available for Mac, with Windows users awaiting a release. The browser has the core premise of integrating ChatGPT’s tech directly into the browsing experience. Now, Atlas is introducing nine new functionalities via update that aim to make the browser more suitable for daily, practical use.
OpenAI updates Atlas AI browser with iCloud Passkeys, Chrome extensions/search engine
The update focuses on combining the core AI features that define Atlas with the essential usability standards set by established browsers like Chrome and Safari. This way, more users would find it possible to transition from their current one.
A notable addition addressing security and convenience is the integration of iCloud Passkeys. Users can now create and utilize passkeys for various websites, storing them directly within their iCloud, which simplifies secure logins significantly.
For users accustomed to established browser ecosystems, Atlas is boosting personalization. The update finally includes the ability to import Chrome extensions. This allows users to recreate their familiar browsing environment easily. Furthermore, one of the most requested features has been addressed: users can now set Google as their default search engine. So, they can mix flexible web search options alongside the central ChatGPT functionality.
Enhancing workflow and design
On the productivity front, the update introduces several UI and navigation improvements. The most visual change is the addition of vertical tabs, a feature highly demanded by power users who work with numerous open pages. This change optimizes the use of modern wide displays and provides a cleaner overview of open tabs.
Workflow enhancements continue with better control over tab management. Users can now select multiple tabs at once (using Shift + click) and quickly cycle through their most recently used tabs (Control + Tab). There are also improvements to the responsiveness and functionality of the “Ask ChatGPT” sidebar. Atlas’ product manager Adam Fry noted that the browser will make content analysis and task completion more seamless.
In its first iteration, OpenAI’s Atlas received some criticism for missing features. With this update, the company is addressing those criticisms and adding more functionality to its browser. It remains to be seen if this will be enough to encourage more people to make the switch. We also hope that the Windows version of Atlas arrives soon.
