BMW is arguably most famous for its range of straight six engines, the powerplants having featured in many of its early and current M-Division tuned offerings, but also its more affordable portfolio of vehicles. The German brand tended to steer clear of V8 engines like its Mercedes-Benz rival, having only ever produced one type prior to the 1990s.
