Call of Duty is a storied franchise that has most certainly shaped the landscape of first-person shooters during its decades-long run, and it’s finally finding a home on the silver screen as Paramount has just reportedly signed a deal to produce the movie. Details are more or less non-existent on the contents or premise of the film. Nothing is known about the cast, when it will begin filming, or what game the movie will base its story on. That is, if Paramount doesn’t just come up with its own non-canon story within the universe. After all, Paramount handled the Halo TV show and definitely took a few creative liberties.
What is known about the movie is that Paramount has agreed to make it. The studio has entered into an agreement with Microsoft-owned Activision to helm the movie’s creation. There are a few other details that have been made public, too.
Paramount will develop, produce, and distribute the Call of Duty movie
Although there isn’t much in the way of story for the film yet, Variety (via Engadget) reports that Paramount has signed on to develop, produce, and distribute the movie for Activision. The details of the deal’s valuation have not been disclosed.
Variety also reports (according to sources) that Paramount’s deal revolves around the potential to expand into other projects. Such as additional live-action movies and even a TV series. As a theme, Call of Duty could certainly do well in live-action. Provided the projects stick to the more grounded themes within the franchise. Though, realistically, a Call of Duty Zombies movie could do well here, too. Considering how well fleshed out the Zombies story has gotten over the past few games, it could work.
Our one hope is that Activision doesn’t take this chance to try and squeeze in any microtransactions. Just imagine going to see this movie and being asked if you’d like to upgrade to the Blackcell movie ticket for an additional $30.
A long way off
It’s pretty telling that, based on the public terms of the deal, this movie is nowhere near release. Paramount likely hasn’t even started developing the movie’s storyline. Which will have to be done well ahead of production and distribution. Not to mention finding the right cast for every role once the script is written. The details of this deal being made public, however, are coming at a good time.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is set to release in just a couple of months. The game will officially be released on November 14 for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. What better way to drive some more hype for the game than to have a story leak that the franchise is officially getting a movie?
