At Microsoft’s official Xbox Game Showcase over the weekend, the company lifted the curtain on the next Call of Duty game and revealed Black Ops 7 with a teaser trailer. The trailer opens up with the greeting of a robot that says “welcome to The Guild,” who then proceeds to walk what appears to be you through an unknown facility before a bunch of really weird stuff happens.
It’s not immediately clear what the game is in the beginning, though some long-time fans may have noticed that David Mason is the character you first see (other than the robot) in the trailer. Around the halfway point, players are faced with Raul Menendez, who just so happens to be the main antagonist of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. This revelation means that Menendez is coming back to the Call of Duty: Black Ops franchise, though it’s not clear in what capacity. At the end of Black Ops II, if players choose the canon ending, David Mason kills Menendez. Alternatively, there’s an option to imprison him instead.
Zombies mode revealed for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
Most of the trailer is a cinematic with early whispers of the game’s narrative, though there’s not much beyond David Mason moving through what looks like alternate universes and coming face to face with ghosts from his past. Towards the end of the trailer, however, there’s about 12-13 seconds of footage that looks like cutscenes from the game. One of these is a snippet of a horde of zombies shambling around, which confirms that Zombies will return for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
This probably doesn’t surprise anyone, given that Zombies is available in every Black Ops title in the series, including the current Call of Duty game, Black Ops 6. Still, it’s nice to see that Activision is confirming the mode for the upcoming release.
There’s not a whole lot else to pick up from the trailer. That being said, perhaps there are a few hints there that the most well-versed Black Ops historians can pick up on.
The game launches later this year and will feature a co-op campaign
The game is launching sometime later this year, but Activision hasn’t confirmed a launch date yet. We just entered into season four of Black Ops 6. There are two more seasons after that. That means the game will likely keep to its annual schedule. In other words, players should expect to see the new game sometime this Fall.
Putting the launch aside, Microsoft has given out one interesting detail about the game. It will have a campaign that’s playable completely in co-op.
