The Boston Planning Department has recommended approval of four new development projects, including the construction of a new cancer center in the Longwood Medical Area. At an estimated cost of $1.68 billion, the project would entail the demolition of the existing Joslin Diabetes Center Building at 1 Joslin Pl. and the construction of a 14-story building containing approximately 300 inpatient beds and 20 observation beds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, together with clinical support space for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
“The project is in response to a growing need for inpatient cancer care capacity and driven by diverse factors ranging from aging populations to new state-of-the-art treatments,” according to the Planning Department. “This project will allow an expansion of cutting-edge care.”
Among other infrastructure improvements, the project would involve the construction of a tunnel under and a bridge over Brookline Avenue to connect the new building to Dana-Farber’s existing facility.
