It’s taken humanity a long time to smooth out the bumps. In the olden times, a basic carriage might have a couple wood wheels stuck on both ends of a shaft. It didn’t take up much space, but your backside felt every pebble on the ground. Leaf springs eventually came along – literally pieces of metal stacked together and designed to flex over bumps. You’ll still find them in use today, especially on heavier vehicles, but they aren’t known for comfort.
