Already a brilliant sports coupe in standard form, BMW is planning to introduce an even more focused version of the M2, the brand’s littlest M car. This will be a street-legal Track Package for the M2, which was teased by BMW earlier this year. At the time, we could spot a huge rear wing and Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires as part of the upgrades, but BMW didn’t divulge too many details. Now, we have more information about this package from Frank van Meel, BMW M’s CEO, who spoke about the Track Pack in more detail at the BMW M Festival in Chengdu, China.
A Meaner, More Aerodynamic M2

In an interview with BMW Blog, van Meel shared more information about this latest iteration of the M2. Starting with the aerodynamic and visual changes, the car remained partially camouflaged at the BMW M Festival, but not enough to conceal some obvious changes.
Firstly, this is a retrofit package for the M2 that will be available through dealers next year. Customers will have to purchase the complete package, not individual components, as they’re all engineered to work together.
“We wanted to make a package specifically for the track, but still [keep it] street-legal,” said van Meel. “You can keep your number plate on, but it’s a hardcore package for track use.”
Visual changes include a new, deeper front splitter and winglets, the latter familiar from the brand’s DTM race cars. The rear wing with its integrated brake light creates more downforce, and lower down, the obligatory four rounded tailpipes are exactly where you’d expect them to be. Van Meel hinted at a unique hood for the M2, but was reluctant to give away any specifics.

More Advanced Suspension

Van Meel confirmed the car will come with a “track-specific suspension setup”. This new, innovative coilover suspension has been developed for this package; the publication points out that this setup goes beyond the coilover kit you can already purchase via the M Performance Parts catalog.

Together with the aerodynamic changes, the Track Package should make the M2 even quicker on the track—it’s already one of the quickest compact cars to lap the Nürburgring—but no increase is expected to the outputs from the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. This mill produces 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, and comes with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. BMW probably wouldn’t want to step on the M2 CS’ toes with any other M2; that model makes 523 hp and will remain the pinnacle of street-legal M2s.
