Blender is undoubtedly one of the most popular 3D modeling and animation tools out there. For years, if you wanted to dive into that world, you needed a powerful desktop computer. This useful free and open-source software has been largely confined to Windows, macOS, and Linux. But that’s about to change in a big way. The Blender team has officially announced they are developing versions for iPad and Android tablets.
This is huge news for creators on the go. While tablets have had multi-touch interfaces for a long time, it’s only recently that their processing power has truly allowed them to act as primary computing devices for demanding tasks. Other professional design tools like Photoshop have successfully made the leap. And now, Blender is following suit, aiming to make its technology even more accessible to everyone.
Blender to reach your iPad and Android tablet
The vision for Blender on tablets is ambitious: it’s intended to be a “complete Blender experience.” The team isn’t planning to simplify the interface or strip away functionality to appeal to brand-new users. Instead, they’re focused on bringing the full power of Blender to a touch-first environment for existing users. The initial versions will start with core features like basic object manipulation and sculpting. However, more advanced capabilities like Grease Pencil and storyboarding support are planned for later.
Interestingly, some of the development work for tablets will even bring improvements back to the desktop version.
True to a common industry trend, the iPad version with Apple Pencil support will be the priority for initial release. Meanwhile, Android and other tablets will follow later. There’s no firm release date just yet, as the team is still gathering feedback and seeking more developers to join the effort. However, if you’re attending the SIGGRAPH 2025 graphics conference in Vancouver next month, you might get an early peek. The team confirmed that they will showcase a tech demo of Blender running on an iPad Pro there.
The arrival of a fully-fledged Blender on tablets is a game-changer. The tool will open up a plethora of new possibilities for 3D artists who rely on portable devices. Creating intricate models and stunning animations from virtually anywhere will soon be a reality.
