Twitter (now X) co-founder Jack Dorsey’s weekend project, Bitchat Mesh, unlike traditional messaging apps, offers a different way to contact your friends and family. The app doesn’t depend on the internet to work. Instead, it relies on Bluetooth for messaging. While the Android version of the app is still limited to GitHub, the iOS version has now landed on the App Store.
Bitchat Mesh offers a unique way to message friends
The Bitchat Mesh app uses Bluetooth to relay messages from one person to another. Technically, this means the app will work when there are enough Bluetooth devices nearby to send your messages. This can be a handy alternative in places where there’s no internet connectivity. But it can be cumbersome when there are no Bluetooth-enabled devices nearby. Swiping left/tapping the user icon shows the list of accessible devices.

Users don’t have to register their phone number or email address with the app. It doesn’t even need you to create an account to work, dismissing any privacy concerns. This also enables users to keep their identity private. The app assigns an “@” handle randomly, which is customizable.
There’s end-to-end encryption
There’s also end-to-end encryption like any other instant messaging platform. This ensures all the conversations remain private, and not even the developers of the app can intercept them. Additionally, this peer-to-peer messaging app offers a ‘panic mode’ to erase all your data. You can do this by triple-tapping the app’s logo.
The app is available on the iOS App Store
The iOS version of the app reportedly has a bug that prevents connection with Android devices. Jack Dorsey says a fix has been sent to Apple and is waiting for approval. The Android app may land on the Google Play Store shortly.
Considering the barebones interface and unusual connectivity tech, the app may see limited reach among users, unlike WhatsApp. It may attract those who are looking for unique means of communication and want a straightforward approach. Since the app just launched, it should be a while before more users appear in your vicinity to send messages.
