Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10 for PC, Xbox Series X, and PS5, with a boatload of new features and some exciting gameplay, but one thing it won’t include is ray tracing. It might seem like this is a relatively minor detail about the game. It could have more significance than what is displayed on the surface. At face value, it just seems like EA made the decision to leave it out. In a report from ComicBook.com, EA-owned studio Ripple Effect confirmed that the game would launch without ray tracing. What’s more, is that EA has no plans to add it later on either.
For years now, NVIDIA has been extoling the virtues of ray tracing. Many AAA games have made a point to highlight that ray tracing support would be included. Ray tracing does make some details in games look better. However, it also often puts a much heavier load on system resources. This can lead to performance taking a big hit. At the end of the day, for many gamers, the tradeoff just isn’t worth it. EA obviously agrees, which is where this speculation comes from.
The decision to launch Battlefield 6 without ray tracing might be a sign that developers are moving away from including support
It’s important to note that this is just speculation. EA so far is the only major publisher with a big AAA game that has outwardly spoken about choosing to leave out ray tracing from a big title release. That being said, there’s no confirmation that other studios will follow suit. However, it does make you wonder.
According to Gamer Meld on YouTube, the decision to leave ray tracing support out of Battlefield 6 at launch could be a sign of things to come. Of course, it’s just as equally possible that EA and Battlefield Studios may end up alone here. However, the studio’s decision to forgo ray tracing makes a lot of sense. It wants to focus on providing good performance for the majority of players. Performance would obviously take a hit if you enabled ray tracing. Given that the majority of players aren’t going to have a desktop PC that costs several thousand dollars, it would be hard to get around that.
While one major game coming without this tech doesn’t guarantee developers will start moving away from adding it, it’s a somewhat big deal that a title as big as Battlefield 6 isn’t going to offer it. That being said, Ripple Effect doesn’t say that ray tracing will never be available for the game. But, other studios may take notice and weigh their own pros and cons of adding it in the future.
