Austin, Seattle, Denver, San Francisco and Raleigh top the list of U.S. metro areas with the most momentum for STEM job growth, RCLCO Real Estate Consulting said Thursday. The 2025 STEM Job Growth Index (STEMdex), which puts Austin at the top of the ranking for the fourth consecutive year, was largely consistent with the 2024 index, except that two Florida cities (Tampa and Jacksonville) entered the top 20 for the first time, replacing Phoenix and St. Louis.
“STEM occupations, supported by a highly educated and innovative workforce, are among the most economically influential and highest paying in any market,” said Gregg Logan, managing director at RCLCO. “Their expansion not only creates quality jobs but also drives innovation, attracts investment, and shapes long-term housing and infrastructure demand. The STEMdex provides a clear and practical framework for understanding how STEM-driven growth will influence the economic trajectory of cities across the country.”
Published annually since 2016, the STEMdex focuses on metrics in four major areas: STEM Trends/Economic Factors, Workforce Quality, Quality of Life/Health, and Business Climate.
