Audi’s mid-size sedan went by many names in the ’80s and ’90s but was called the 5000 in the US before the 1996 C4 started using Audi’s A-prefixed nomenclature. The Type 4A C4 was the first of five Audi A6 generations. It was succeeded by the C5 from the 1998 model year, with changes to the Audi A6 formula including better aerodynamics, 30-valve V6 engines, a new five-speed Tiptronic automatic, and a Multitronic CVT; it was facelifted in 2001.
