For Apple’s current lineup of MacBook Pro models, the company uses mini LED displays. But according to fresh rumors, Apple could switch to OLED in 2026 for the redesign of the MacBook Pro. If you were holding out for next year’s MacBook Pros, we have some bad news for you.
OLED MacBook Pro redesign could be exclusive to some models
In the latest issue of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that the OLED MacBook Pro redesign could be exclusive to the higher-end configurations of the MacBook Pro. As you might have heard, Apple is expected to launch new MacBook Pro models next year powered by its M6 chipset.
Apple usually offers several configurations of its MacBook Pro, but this report suggests that only the M6 Pro and M6 Max models could get the OLED display. This means if you were hoping to get the base (and cheapest) MacBook Pro configuration, you might not get the OLED display.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The mini LED displays Apple uses for the current models are pretty good. Obviously there are some advantages to going full OLED, but it doesn’t diminish the capabilities or functionality of the laptop.
Other incoming changes
The introduction of OLED displays isn’t the only change Apple has planned. According to Gurman, Apple is also planning to redesign the MacBook Pros. The last time Apple redesigned its laptops was in 2021 with a flatter and slimmer design. Gurman claims that Apple will be making further changes with an even thinner body and touch support.
So, when will these new MacBook Pros come? Gurman’s timeline of Apple’s product launches suggests that it could arrive in either late 2026 or early 2027. Apple recently updated its MacBook Pro with the M5 chipset. The company is expected to introduce M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations next year.
This means that unless Apple doesn’t want to upset its customers, choosing an early 2027 launch might be a better idea. Either way, these are just rumors, so take it with a grain of salt for now. But in the meantime, who else is planning on holding out for the OLED MacBook Pro? Or do you think mini LEDs are more than sufficient?
