Apple is gearing up to launch its iPhone 17 models, possibly at its hardware event in September. There will be a new ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air model this year, replacing the “Plus” variant. In the midst of this, a new report sheds light on the new OLED display tech for its 2028 iPhones. The company is apparently considering tandem OLED, which debuted on last year’s premium iPad Pro models.
2028 iPhones may feature a tandem OLED display
As per a report from The Elec, the Cupertino giant is evaluating plans to expand tandem OLED displays for the iPhone. The said display tech made its debut on the iPad Pro 2024. This brings two OLED panels layered on top of each other. The tandem OLEDs offer higher brightness output while resulting in reduced power consumption.
The report says that Apple is evaluating the optimal tandem OLED display for the iPhone. The company is considering a simplified implementation, which will still have two panels. However, the second OLED layer will only have blue subpixels, while the primary panel houses the red and green ones.

The report adds Apple may bring iPhones with tandem OLED in 2028. While there’s no explicit mention of which model would receive the new display tech, it could be exclusive to Pro models, at least initially.
Apple in talks with LG and Samsung Display
LG Display is said to have contacted Apple regarding the simplified tandem OLED display last year. Meanwhile, the company is also reportedly in talks with Samsung Display, which is its other key supplier. Meanwhile, BOE, which is Apple’s largest display supplier, is under investigation by the US Defense Department.
Besides the tandem OLED display, rumors point to a completely bezel-less iPhone in development. However, this may not arrive until 2030, going by the most recent report, as Apple is reportedly planning a three-stage approach.
