I have to be honest, when Apple first unveiled the iPhone Air, it was the first time in a long time I felt this excited about an Apple product. But it turns out I might be in the minority here. According to a wild claim on Weibo, it has been suggested that the iPhone Air might be canceled.
Will the iPhone Air be canceled?
Now, we had recently heard a report from Mizuho Securities which claimed that Apple had cut production of the iPhone Air. However, to suggest that the iPhone Air might be canceled is something else entirely. The phone has been on the market for less than two months, how disastrous are the sales figures that could lead to Apple cutting it loose this soon?
Unfortunately, we don’t know the exact sales figures of the iPhone Air. However, it must have been low enough for Apple to scale back on production. Apple isn’t alone here, either. If you recall, Samsung has also reportedly put an end to the production of the Galaxy S25 Edge. The company has also apparently scrapped plans for a Galaxy S26 Edge. This suggests that maybe the market isn’t quite ready to re-embrace the concept of ultra-thin phones. Especially if it comes at the expense of certain features like cameras or battery life.
What’s interesting is that both Motorola and Huawei have tossed their hats into the ring as well. It will be interesting to see if either company can succeed where Apple and Samsung have failed.
Should we be surprised?
What’s interesting is that according to the Weibo post, it mentions (based on machine translation) that if you must make a phone this small and thin, you should launch a foldable instead. This is actually something we’ve heard before.
Ahead of the iPhone Air’s launch, there were rumors that Apple was using the device as a testbed for its upcoming foldable iPhone. Apple probably doesn’t want to launch a foldable smartphone without gauging potential interest and identifying issues ahead of time. The iPhone Air was supposed to help with that.
In fact, there have been rumors that claim the foldable iPhone is essentially two iPhone Airs placed side-by-side. So, maybe it’s not a complete loss for Apple if it ultimately cancels the iPhone Air. It could use the knowledge and feedback for its upcoming foldable, which last we heard, might have been pushed back to 2027.
