Many Apple fans are probably excited for 2026. This is because 2026 is when Apple is rumored to launch its first ever foldable, the iPhone Fold. However, recent rumors suggest that the phone might have been delayed to 2027. But the bad news doesn’t stop there. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s plans for a foldable iPad has also been delayed.
The foldable iPad has been delayed
According to the report, Apple’s plans for its foldable iPad has been delayed possibly into 2029. The company was previously rumored to launch the device in 2028, but several issues might have forced the company to delay the launch.
The report claims that issues with the overall weight and display technology might be the cause behind the delay. We can’t say we’re too surprised at this. We’ve been hearing rumors about Apple entering the foldables space for years. But every year, we hear those plans have been delayed.
Apple seems to be trying to perfect the device ahead of its launch, and we can’t blame them. The Cupertino company has had years to learn from all the mistakes from its competitors. When Samsung first launched its foldable, there were numerous issues related to the hinge and display. This is why Apple took its time to perfect those components, where we’ve heard that the foldable iPhone could have a display with a nearly invisible crease and an extremely durable hinge design.
This could be the same reason the foldable iPad’s launch date has been pushed back. Apple doesn’t want to release a foldable tablet for the sake of it, so getting the weight and display right makes sense. After all, if it flops, it would be a very costly endeavor for Apple, who probably spent millions on R&D and prototyping.
Apple’s got competition
That being said, the delay of the foldable iPad isn’t good for Apple. While most companies focus on foldable smartphones, we wouldn’t be surprised if more foldable tablets were to arrive in the market. Huawei has already attempted something similar with its MateBook Fold, so for other phone makers like Vivo, Oppo, Honor, or Samsung to step in with something similar wouldn’t come as a surprise.
However, there is the issue of price. The MateBook Fold is priced at around $3,400. That’s a lot of money for a form factor that not everyone wants or needs. In fact, foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is priced close to $2,000, already makes it something of a niche product.
In any case, we’re still a few years away from 2028/2029. So, hopefully we’ll learn more about Apple’s foldable iPad plans between now and then.
