Besides its usual MacBooks (the Air and Pros), Apple has reportedly been working on a low-cost MacBook. Unlike the regular machines, this particular model could feature an iPhone chip, likely the A18 Pro. This will possibly allow Apple to price it less than the usual models. In a new development, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman brings some new details about the low-cost MacBook, like its colors and launch timeline.
Apple’s low-cost MacBook is likely to be available in multiple colors
In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman says that despite the low cost, Apple isn’t cutting corners in terms of build quality. The low-cost MacBook, with codename J700, will not get a plastic body. Instead, it will reportedly get an aluminum case. He adds that Apple has developed a new manufacturing process that allows the shells to be forged more quickly.
This manufacturing process will apparently be both faster and more cost-effective than the ones used with Apple’s current laptops. However, it will have other compromises, like featuring a display that’s slightly under 13 inches. This should make the laptop quite compact to carry around.
The laptop may launch in March
As for the colors, Gurman says that over the past year, Apple has tested multiple playful color options for its upcoming low-cost MacBook, going beyond the muted tones of the current MacBook lineup. These colors include light yellow, light green, blue, pink, classic silver, and dark gray. However, he says that it’s unlikely all of these colors will ship.
The low-cost MacBook is shaping up to be the most colorful Apple laptop in recent times. With multiple color choices, the upcoming machine will reportedly target students and enterprise users. As per Gurman, the upcoming MacBook will cost “well under” $1,000, and Apple is preparing for a launch event as early as March. This means we don’t have to wait much longer to finally meet the low-cost MacBook.
