The majority of computers around the world are typically powered by chips made by Intel or AMD. For a very long time, Apple also used Intel’s CPUs, until they made the shift a few years ago to Apple Silicon. Since then, Apple has proven that its M-series chips can more than hold their own. Now, new benchmarks have shown the new Apple M5 Max chip is beating out the likes of both Intel and AMD.
Apple M5 Max benchmarks destroy Intel and AMD
According to the scores posted on Geekbench, the 18-core Apple M5 Max completely obliterated chips from Intel and AMD. Specifically, we’re talking about the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The M5 Max scored 29,233 points for multi-core performance and 4,260 points for single-core performance.

This means that when compared to Intel and AMD, the M5 Max beat out both chips by 34% and 25%. That’s big enough to be considered a gap, not a margin of error. When compared to other desktop-class chips, like the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, the M5 Max beat those out by around 23%. Even the 64-core Threadripper 9980X was defeated, but at a much smaller gap of 6.6%. But still, that’s impressive to say the least.
How to get the M5 Max?
If you’re excited by that level of performance, you’ll be pleased to learn that Apple has recently refreshed its MacBook Pro computers. Now, customers buying the MacBook Pro have the option to get higher-end configurations. This includes the M5 Pro and the M5 Max, but it won’t come cheap.
The base M5 Max 14-inch model with no upgrades to storage or memory will set you back a staggering $3,599. This gets even more expensive if you opt for the 16-inch model, which costs $3,899. However, these are laptops designed with professionals in mind who need this type of power.
We’re talking about graphic designers, 3D modelers, animators, and so on. If you’re just looking for day-to-day tasks like watching videos, checking emails, sending messages, or browsing the web, the $599 MacBook Neo might be a better option.
That being said, rumor has it that Apple has plans for an even higher-end MacBook. This is rumored to come in the form of the MacBook Ultra. So far, the biggest upgrades we’re hearing are to the display, where it will be the first MacBook to feature a touchscreen OLED. However, other than that, we’re not sure if it will fare any better in the performance department.
