How many devices does Apple have floating out there in this great big world today? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands? Millions? Try billions. In a press release for Apple’s latest earnings results, CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple has a staggering 2.5 billion active devices worldwide.
Apple boasts 2.5 billion active devices
What makes this particularly impressive is we’re talking about active devices. We’re not talking about how many devices Apple has sold over the years. We’re talking about 2.5 billion active devices that are currently being used.
According to Cook, “We are also excited to announce that our installed base now has more than 2.5 billion active devices, which is a testament to incredible customer satisfaction for the very best products and services in the world.”
Apple had previously said that it had more than 2.35 billion devices in the year-ago quarter. This means that the company’s active devices list is still growing. There’s also a chance that the iPhone 17 played a role in that. Based on Apple’s official figures, iPhone revenue in the quarter was $85.2 billion, up from $69.1 billion a year ago. The company did not break it down by model, except to say that revenue was largely driven by the “iPhone 17 family.”
These figures aren’t surprising. There have been many signs to suggest Apple’s iPhones have been doing well. A recent report revealed that 7 out of 10 best-selling phones belong to Apple.
Keeping the price down
All this seems to affirm an earlier report, which claimed that Apple is expected to eat the cost of the rising RAM prices in order to maintain the iPhone 18’s price tag. It might seem counterintuitive for companies to absorb costs on behalf of customers, especially since passing those costs down is standard play.
However, with 2.5 billion active devices and growing, that’s a lot of potential for services revenue. Apple’s financials have shown that over the year, its services sector has been increasing in revenue. We’re talking about subscriptions to Apple One, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple Music, and more.
Plus, more apps are turning to subscriptions in which Apple also gets its cut. So, Apple might take a hit by absorbing the cost of memory for now, but long-run, it locks users into its ecosystem.
