Earlier this year during WWDC 2025, Apple officially announced its next major iOS update: iOS 26. We kind of already know roughly what to expect based on the developer previews. However, if you’re looking to install it on your iPhone, we may finally have a release date for iOS 26.
iOS 26 release date revealed
According to the footnotes of the iPhone Air press release, Apple confirmed that iOS 26 will have a release date set for September 15. We can’t say this comes as a total surprise. Apple typically releases its next major iOS update to coincide with the release of its latest iPhone. It looks like Apple won’t be breaking tradition this year.
What’s new?
One of the biggest changes in iOS 26 over iOS 18 is its design. Apple hasn’t really done much to the design of iOS since iOS 7. The company has made some tweaks here and there, but nothing major.
However, with iOS 26, Apple is introducing what it is calling “Liquid Glass.” This is the company’s latest design language. It is said to be inspired by the glass-like effects found in the Vision Pro’s visionOS platform, and it shows. That being said, not everyone is a fan. The use of glass is nice in theory, but in practice, some of the UI elements are hard to read.
Apple has been playing around with the intensity of the glass effect, so we’re not sure if the final version will be the original design shown at WWDC or a more toned-down version.
iOS 26 will also introduce a bunch of new features. We’re talking about Live Transition, a new layout for the Phone app, call screening, and more. Now, the question is, is your iPhone eligible for the update?
According to Apple’s website, iOS 26 is compatible with iPhones dating back to the iPhone SE 2nd gen. It also covers the iPhone 11 right up to the iPhone 17. So, unless you own a much older iPhone, you should be good to go.
