Apple has announced that Samsung will be making chips for its products, including iPhones. That’s not all, however, as those chips will be manufactured in the US, in Samsung’s Austin factory.
Samsung will make chips for Apple’s iPhones and other products… in the US
Apple said that Samsung will supply chips that “optimize power and performance of Apple products.” It’s unclear whether those are the A series chips, which are the soul of iPhones, or not.
Samsung did manufacture those chips in the past, but not for quite some time now. TSMC is Apple’s manufacturer of choice for A-series chips, and that has been the case for a long time. So, it remains to be seen.
This announcement was a part of Apple’s huge investment announcement. Apple is set to invest $100 billion in the US economy, basically. It has revealed plans to set up a manufacturing unit and a supplier economy in the States. This investment will occur in the next four years.
Having said that, Ice Universe, a well-known tipster from China, did throw more info to the table. He says that Samsung will develop a “new chip manufacturing innovation technology that has never been used anywhere else in the world,” in collaboration with Apple.
Samsung is allegedly planning to make CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) for Apple
That piece of information doesn’t seem to refer to the A series chips. Furthermore, he added that industry insiders say that the chip produced in this back is a CMOS image sensor (CIS). If true, this means that Samsung will produce and supply next-gen CIS to Apple, pushing Sony aside after 10 years. Once again, this is not official info, at least not just yet.
A report from TheElec added even more oil to the fire. The report claims that Samsung is developing 3-stack hybrid bonding CIS sensors for Apple. Those sensors could be used in the iPhone 18 lineup next year, or the year after.
Samsung allegedly converted a part of its S1 foundry fab line in Texas into a CIS production line. It is capable of making 10,000 wafers per month. It will start operating in March 2026, it is said.
