Apple and Google are once again in the spotlight after a new report reveals AI-powered nudify apps on their platforms. What’s concerning is that many of these apps can take normal photos and create nude images even without permission. The finding raises concerns about privacy, security, and clear oversight by tech giants on their app stores.
A new report reveals tons of nudify apps on Google and Apple’s marketplace
A study published by Tech Transparency Project, a nonprofit group that tracks digital risks, shows a clear case of oversight by Google and Apple. To begin with, the researchers searched the Apple App Store and Google Play Store using terms linked to undressing photos. What’s shocking is that they found tons of apps that use AI to remove clothing or swap faces onto nude bodies. A comprehensive test further reveals that the apps are clearly built for sexualized results, not simple photo editing or changes.
After being informed about such apps, Apple said it removed several apps and warned their respective developers. Some apps were allowed to return to the App Store once required changes were made. Google, on the other hand, said it suspended multiple apps while reviews continue. Both companies emphasize that they are against the apps that create sexual images and will continue to take action against them.
The brands were too late in taking action
Critics say that the brands were too late in removing the apps from their platforms. To give you an idea, some apps had millions of downloads and generated large amounts of revenue. Reports like this question the concept of privacy and consent in the evolving digital space. xAI recently faced backlash after its chatbot Grok produced sexualized images. The company restricted the tool only after the backlash.
Several governments and worldwide users are already against any app or service that creates sexualized images. However, most companies take action only when they face a backlash or are reported on such apps. This needs to be fixed by the companies as soon as possible.
