In a courtroom drama that feels straight out of an Orwellian novel, the AI startup Anthropic has secured a significant legal win against the Trump administration. On Thursday, Judge Rita F. Lin of the Northern District of California issued a preliminary injunction, blocking the government’s attempt to label the company a “supply chain risk.” This designation would have effectively blacklisted Anthropic from federal contracts and crippled its operations.
The friction began when the Department of Defense sought to use Anthropic’s flagship AI, Claude, for “all legal purposes.” Anthropic, on the other hand, insisted on strict rules that would keep the military from using its models for things like mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapon systems. The government’s response was to brand the American company as a national security threat. The administration alleged that Anthropic could disable its AI services in the middle of operations.

Judge Lin’s ruling didn’t pull any punches. She described the government’s measures as “punitive.” The judge also suggested they were an attempt to silence the company for its public disagreement with the administration. In her decision, as noted by TechCrunch, judge Lin argued that punishing a domestic firm for expressing its values and bringing public scrutiny to government contracts constitutes a “classic illegal First Amendment retaliation.”
The court found the government’s logic to be particularly concerning. The administration had argued that Anthropic’s act of “questioning” how its technology was used showed “subversive tendencies.” Judge Lin rejected this, stating that nothing in the law supports the “Orwellian notion” that an American company can be branded a saboteur simply for disagreeing with the government.
What’s next?
It’s noteworthy that the lawsuit is far from over. However, the injunction provides a much-needed breather for the tech firm. In a statement provided to The New York Times, Anthropic expressed gratitude for the court’s swift action.
