Apple has increased the price of the Apple TV+ streaming service by 30%. It’s the third Apple TV+ subscription price rise since the service’s debut in 2019. Apple TV+ users will now have to pay $12.99 per month, according to a report by 9to5Mac.
Apple has raised the Apple TV+ subscription price by 30%
When Apple launched the Apple TV+ streaming service in 2019, it used to cost just $4.99 per month in the US. In 2022, Apple increased the pricing to $6.99 a month. Then again, in October 2023, the Apple TV+ subscription saw its second price rise, now costing $9.99 per month.
Apple has now reportedly increased the service’s monthly pricing to $12.99. It is a steep price hike of 30% from the previous pricing. Notably, the annual subscription to the service will continue to cost $99 in the US. Furthermore, Apple One bundle prices aren’t jumping, the report suggests.
The increased pricing for Apple TV+ is effective immediately for new subscribers. They will continue to get various free trial offers from Apple. As for existing users, the price hike will take effect 30 days after their plan’s renewal date. Apart from the US, the new Apple TV+ price rise also applies to some unknown international markets.
Why the price hike?
In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple tried to justify the price hike and stated that Apple TV+ has expanded its library of originals since launch. “Subscribers can explore a rich offering of thrilling dramas, epic sci-fi, feel-good comedies, and live sports,” added the brand. Also, the company mentioned the value of its Apple One plans with a variety of its services.
It’s worth mentioning that Apple TV+ doesn’t offer as vast a library of originals as rivals Netflix and Disney+. However, after a slow start, the company has found success with the Severance show, which is hitting a grand slam in terms of viewership and Emmy 2025 nominations. It’s worth noting that Apple TV+ is the only streaming service that doesn’t provide an ad-supported tier.
That said, the statement regarding the price rise has followed recent reports of Apple TV+ annually losing millions of dollars. Although the number of subscribers surpassed 45 million last year, the service is reportedly losing $1 billion per year.
