Google’s much-hyped Material 3 Expressive design may soon find its way to more UI elements. The Android lock screen widgets could get a slick background blur effect. This change will make it more consistent with other sections of the interface and Google native apps, which are steadily getting the taste of the firm’s new design guidelines. Material 3 Expressive is probably the biggest UI makeover in years for Google. It brings a bolder design with vibrant colors, larger buttons, and improved animations.
Google may blur your Android’s lock screen widgets soon
Google launched the Android Canary program recently. This gives developers year-round access to preview new Android features. What makes this first Canary build special is that it is slightly newer than the latest Android 16 QPR1 beta. This means it contains some changes not present in the beta. One of the changes is reportedly the lock screen widgets’ blur effect.

The lock screen widget page in the Android 16 QPR1 beta has an opaque background using the wallpaper’s dominant color. On the other hand, the July Android Canary Build applies the blurred wallpaper effect, which is seen in the Recents screen, keyguard, and notification panel. This UI change brings the lock screen’s look in line with Google’s Material 3 Expressive design.
Lock screen widgets for phones
Support for lock screen widgets was reintroduced in Android 15 QPR1, but the feature is exclusive to tablets for now. Google confirmed that lock screen widgets are coming to phones in Android 16 QPR1. However, it isn’t active in the current beta or Canary builds. Hopefully, we might see the feature land on phones soon, considering there’s only one beta left in the Android 16 QPR1 program.
