Smartphone camera sensors have increased in size over the years. Now, the latest thing is the 200MP camera. Right now, Samsung is the main supplier of these sensors, and it appears that the company has found a market for 200MP cameras intended for zoom systems. Sadly, they’re not aiming at Galaxy phones.
Despite building them, Samsung doesn’t really use its 200MP telephoto cameras on its phones. We only see them as the main sensor in their “Ultra” models, like the latest Galaxy S25 Ultra. Meanwhile, the firm sells the 200MP cameras to other brands. Right now, Samsung has its HP3, HP5, and HP9 telephoto sensors. Even though the company has access to the technology to build the sensors, it still plays it safe with the cameras it puts in its phones.
Samsung has found a market for its 200MP cameras
The adoption of 200MP telephoto cameras has not been the fastest. However, like most technologies, it’s been picking up. But now it appears that the Chinese market is looking to bring this technology into the mainstream. According to a report, Chinese phone makers are going to increase their adoption of 200MP zoom sensors.
In April, the vivo X200 Ultra surprised the industry with its 200MP periscope lens for powerful zoom. Well, the number of Chinese brands using this technology is going to increase as time goes on. Recently, Ice Universe, a reputable leaker, stated in a post that the company’s HP3, HP5, and HP9 telephoto cameras will be widely adopted by Chinese smartphone makers in their flagship phones.

Since these companies are going to be using them in their flagship devices, we can expect exceptional performance from them. Companies like Vivo have already been praised for their excellent camera performance.
The jury is still out on whether Samsung ever plans to use 200MP zoom cameras in its own Galaxy devices. The company is pretty much a pioneer with smartphone camera zoom. So, it will be great to see how Samsung can utilize its own trend-setting technology.
