With Android Auto 16.2 stable now rolling out more widely, Google has launched Android Auto 16.3 update in beta. While there are no major changes on the surface for users, it does include hints at what’s to come in the future. This includes video apps and progress in Android Auto’s light theme.
Android Auto 16.3 update includes hints of a light theme
While there are major changes on the surface in the Android Auto 16.3 update, it’s safe to assume there are some bug fixes internally, as is usually the case. Folks at 9to5Google have discovered a couple of “noteworthy tidbits” in the Android Auto 16.3 update. Firstly, the update includes signs of continued work on Android Auto’s light theme. This is something that’s been in the works for more than a year. There’s a flag present in Android Auto 16.3, which suggests that Google is still working on a light/dark theme toggle.
That said, there’s still nothing visible on the surface for users. The report states that signs of a light theme have been lingering for quite some time now, as said. So, another flag showing up in Android Auto 16.3 update doesn’t really mean much except for Google continuing to tinker with the feature.
Signs of video apps
Perhaps more notable behind-the-scenes change is that Google has reportedly added another flag around video apps on Android Auto. “CradleFeature__allow_video_apps.” If you can remember, Google announced in May 2025 that video apps would be coming to Android Auto. However, there was no set timeline for this.
While it still stands that video apps will only work when the car is parked and not during motion, the new flag is certainly a positive sign that Google is actively working on the feature. However, it doesn’t tell when it might arrive.
