Amazon has just debuted AI-powered smart glasses for its delivery drivers. The wearable allows the e-commerce giant’s associates to complete deliveries without relying on smartphones. The device uses computer vision and machine learning to provide real-time directions, package identification, and proof-of-delivery capture. The delivery partners can see all of this information directly in their field of view.
Amazon starts testing AI-backed smart glasses for delivery drivers
Amazon has been working on AI-powered smart glasses for its delivery drivers for a while. It has now finally started testing the wearable in North America. The company says that it has designed and optimized the smart glasses with input from hundreds of delivery associates. This collaboration ensures the firm’s new technology addresses real-world challenges faced by its partners during their daily tasks.
As per the brand’s blog post, the smart glasses automatically activate upon parking to help drivers quickly locate the correct package inside the vehicle. Furthermore, the hands-free system provides turn-by-turn walking directions for complex locations like apartment buildings. Using these glasses, Amazon delivery associates can scan packages and capture proof of delivery without touching their phone
The smart glasses have swappable batteries and support prescription lenses
Amazon has also provided a small controller with operational controls with the smart glasses, which the drivers can put in their delivery vest. The wearable also features a swappable battery, which ensures all-day use without having to charge it again and again.
There’s also a dedicated emergency button to contact emergency services for the drivers along their routes if needed. Like many other smart glasses on the market, Amazon’s AI-powered smart glasses also support prescription lenses. These are in addition to the traditional lenses, which automatically adjust to light, as per the brand.
Amazon mentioned that the upcoming variants of the smart glasses will provide real-time defect detection. It could alert drivers if they accidentally drop a package at the wrong address. Additional planned features include pet detection in yards and automatic adjustments to challenging conditions such as low-light environments.
