Apple introduced the iPhone 17 lineup alongside the brand-new iPhone Air model a couple of weeks ago. The Cupertino tech giant has now started shipping some of these models to the early buyers. With the fresh hype around the new iPhone 17 range and iPhone Air, a new report suggests that Apple’s next big step in iPhone innovation will arrive next year—its first-ever foldable iPhone. As per Bloomberg, the foldable iPhone could look like two iPhone Air variants joined together with a hinge.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone could feature an Air-like slim profile in unfolded mode
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has a great track record of sharing early new iPhone details, the first foldable iPhone could share design similarities with the iPhone Air. Gurman said, “I am increasingly told that users should imagine two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side. In other words, it’s going to be super thin and a design achievement.” We can also expect the foldable iPhone to feature a highly durable build, just like the iPhone Air.
Notably, the new report refutes rumors that the first foldable iPhone will be a bulky device. Instead, it will be similar to Samsung’s latest book-style foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Korean tech giant’s offering happens to be the slimmest foldable smartphone currently, with a waistline of mere 4.2mm in the unfolded state.
If the report is true, Apple’s first foldable iPhone will start from where the segment is right now in terms of design. The iPhone Air has a super-slim waistline that comes in at just 5.6mm thick. When stacked together in the folded mode, the foldable iPhone could measure 11.2mm around the waist, pretty slim for a first-gen foldable offering. However, it will be potentially thicker than a Pixel 10 Pro Fold (10.8mm) and Galaxy Z Fold 7 (8.9mm).
The first foldable iPhone will be a pricey affair
Additionally, Gurman expects the foldable iPhone to cost more than Google’s latest foldable offering. Apple could offer the device starting at at least $2,000. Earlier reports also suggested a similar price range, with some suggesting the price tag resting between $2,100 and $2,300.
It will be the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever released. The most expensive iPhone right now is the iPhone 17 Pro Max with 2TB of native storage, which costs a hefty $1,999. Rather than aiming at the masses, Apple will use the first-gen iPhone Fold as a showcase for its design and engineering capabilities at the highest level.
If we believe the reports, Apple will launch the iPhone Fold or wherever it ends up calling the device alongside the iPhone 18 range in 2026. However, since it’ll be a brand new iPhone category, there’s a possibility the company will hold a dedicated launch event for it in October or November. For now, we can only wait and watch what Apple has up its sleeves for a foldable device, so stay tuned for regular updates.
