Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson late last year, is expected to appear in a New York courtroom for state charges Tuesday.
Mangione will be appearing alongside his attorneys, who have filed several preliminary motions, some of which will presumably be addressed by a judge at his upcoming hearing. A trial date has not been scheduled.
Mangione is facing state charges in New York and Pennsylvania, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, two counts of second-degree murder, weapons charges and a count of using a forged instrument. The maximum sentence for the state charges would be life without parole.
He has pleaded not guilty.
Mangione also faces federal charges, which could carry the possibility of the death penalty.
Prosecutors have said the two cases will proceed on parallel tracks, with the state charges expected to go to trial first.
Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Thompson in the back and the leg in front of the Hilton Hotel in New York City last year.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office had released excerpts from a notebook, allegedly found on Mangione when he was arrested, that include details and planning behind the killing.
Excerpts revealed a desire to kill Thompson to “prove a political point about the health insurance industry” and “extract human life force for money.”
The alleged shooter has developed a national following since his arrest, and his legal defense fund has received $1.2 million in donations.
