Mercedes Undercuts Rival German Wagons
Back in April, Mercedes-Benz surprised its American fans with the debut of the AMG E53 Hybrid Wagon. It marked the arrival of a proper low-slung performance wagon to the brand’s US lineup, not the lifted crossover with wagon-like pretensions that America currently has. The model was introduced as a fresh rival to the BMW M5 Touring and Audi RS6 Avant, but the Mercedes arrived at a disadvantage on paper.
Rather than the fire-breathing E63, the US gets the less extreme E53, a move that initially felt like Mercedes wasn’t bringing its strongest card to the table.
As it turns out, Mercedes can use this discrepancy as an advantage. The E53 may not match the sheer horsepower of the Audi or BMW, but its pricing has turned that perceived weakness into a strategic strength.

A Price That Stings the Competition
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the AMG E53 Hybrid Wagon will start at $93,350 when it arrives later in 2025. That figure puts it way cheaper than the BMW M5 Touring’s $123,900 base price, and over $37,000 more affordable than the Audi RS6 Avant, which costs $130,700 before on-road fees.
Yes, the power and acceleration numbers reveal a gap – 604 horsepower at best and a 0-60 mph run in 3.8 seconds for the electrified long-roof E53, versus 717 hp and 3.5 seconds for the BMW, and 621 hp with a 3.3-second run for the Audi. However, considering the sizable gap when looking at the sticker prices, the differences in performance may not feel as critical.
For buyers interested in performance wagons but unwilling to commit six figures well past $120,000, Mercedes may have found the sweet spot.

Arriving in Showrooms Later This Year
Beyond the numbers, the AMG E53 Hybrid Wagon carries a detailed engineering package. It pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six with a plug-in hybrid system that includes a 161-hp electric motor and a 28.6-kWh battery. Total system output is 577 hp standard, rising to 604 hp with the optional RACE START function. AMG’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, adaptive suspension, and rear-axle steering are included.
Options such as the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package offer a higher top speed, upgraded brakes, and additional driver-focused hardware. Customization is wide-ranging with 11 paint colors, multiple wheel designs up to 21 inches, and a choice of luxury or sport-focused interiors.
A limited “Edition 1” launch model adds exclusive styling and equipment. Mercedes says the wagon will reach dealerships in early fall 2025, just in time to make BMW and Audi rethink their pricing strategies.
