When Apple introduced MagSafe to the iPhone, one of the cooler implementations of the tech was a battery pack that could adhere to the back of the phone magnetically. No annoying cables or buying bulky cases with built-in battery packs. However, Apple discontinued the accessory in 2023. But now, with the iPhone Air, Apple has brought the MagSafe battery pack back.
iPhone AIr gets MagSafe battery pack accessory
Now, before you get too excited at the idea of the return of the MagSafe battery pack, it’s worth noting that it’s only compatible with the iPhone Air. This is according to Apple’s product page where the iPhone Air is the only model listed under the Compatibility section.
The description even says that it’s an exclusive accessory to the iPhone Air. “The iPhone Air MagSafe Battery was created exclusively for iPhone Air. Designed to slip into your pocket, it feels great in your hand and adds up to 65 percent additional charge to iPhone Air — extending battery life further than that of any other iPhone.”
We’re not sure why Apple chose to make it exclusive. More importantly, how have they redesigned the internals to ensure it won’t work with other iPhones that support MagSafe? During the company’s presentation, they basically said that they had to redesign the internals of the iPhone Air. This is because going so thin required some creative solutions. Unfortunately, maybe due to the placement of the MagSafe magnets, it will only play nice with the iPhone Air and not other iPhone models.
We should have seen this coming
That being said, we can’t say we’re too shocked. When the iPhone Air was still a rumor (and referred to as the iPhone 17 Air), there were rumors about exclusive accessories. The ultra-thin profile of the iPhone Air meant that Apple had to compromise on battery.
An earlier report from The Information revealed that internal testing found that battery life on the iPhone Air wasn’t that great. The report suggested that Apple will release a special accessory for the iPhone Air to counter the poor battery life. Now we know that accessory is the MagSafe Battery pack.
The only problem with Apple’s solution is that customers need to pay for this. The battery pack is priced at $99. Combine that with the iPhone Air’s base price and we’re looking at a price tag of over $1,000. Hopefully, Apple will release a MagSafe battery pack compatible with the other iPhones.
