Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) said his new engagement has brought him “deeper joy” than he’s ever experienced before in his life.
“We have had a blessing, for a long time now, to grow our relationship. This is, again, as my mom tells me, perhaps the biggest blessing I’ve received in my life, to meet somebody like her and to have and share this great commitment. So thank you for that. I’m lucky. Pray for us,” Booker said in a Sunday interview on NBC News’s “Meet the Press.”
“But I’m so excited and feel so grateful. And thank you to everybody in our country who’s just sent us such well wishes and are supporting us as we take this journey,” he continued.
“And I just feel so much of a deeper joy than I’ve ever felt before,” he added.
Booker, famously a lifelong bachelor, announced his engagement on social media earlier this month.
He said at the time that his fiancee, Alexis Lewis, has “transformed me, helping me to ground and center my inner life, and discover the joys of building a nurturing home with someone you love.”
Lewis reportedly works at a real estate investment firm and has been dating Booker for 16 months, NJ.com reported.
Booker previously dated actress Rosario Dawson, but this is the 56-year-old’s first engagement.
The New Jersey Democrat has increasingly taken on a larger national profile within the party and the country in recent years, notably gaining attention earlier this year with his record-breaking 25-hour speech on the Senate floor opposing pending spending cuts in the GOP’s reconciliation bill and President Trump’s agenda more broadly.
Asked in the Sunday interview how he’s prepared his fiancee to step into the political spotlight, Booker said, “I am not sure if there’s anything that can prepare people to be thrust out like she has in the public spotlight.”
