Yesterday, Huawei introduced the Mate XTs Ultimate Design tri-fold smartphone in China as the successor to the Mate XT, the world’s first commercial phone with a tri-fold display. Alongside the new foldable, Huawei has also taken the curtains off its latest tablet, called the MatePad Mini. Huawei is marketing the new device as a phablet offering that has a compact enough footprint and is a big-screen smartphone.
Huawei’s MatePad Mini goes official as a super-slim 8.8-inch tablet
Huawei’s MatePad Mini is one of the slimmest tablets in the world right now, featuring just a 5.1mm waistline. It is also one of the lightest slates, tipping the scale at 255g. Huawei has fitted the new tablet with an 8.8-inch OLED display that offers a 2.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1,800 nits.
The slate also has support for the Huawei M-Pencil Pro, which you can use alongside the companion upgraded Notes app. Notably, the stylus can help you trigger the company’s Celio AI assistant. It can perform various automatic tasks such as voice-to-text conversation, answering calls, and some customized operations.
Huawei has powered the MatePad with an unnamed in-house Kirin processor. If we believe the reports, it is likely the Kirin 9010 chip. It comes in 12GB and 16GB RAM variants and three storage configurations: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Software-wise, the slate boots Huawei’s in-house HarmonyOS 5.1, and comes with a handful of useful features related to productivity and daily use.
Dual rear cameras, calling support, and fast charging support are also on offer
Coming to the other specs, the MatePad Mini gets a 50MP primary camera at the rear. There’s an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens to accompany the main camera at the back. For video calling purposes, the brand has fitted the slate with a 32MP front-facing shooter. Similar to the brand’s other devices, the tablet has various AI-powered photo editing functionalities.
For connectivity, the users will get a single-SIM card slot for calling support and satellite connectivity, apart from Wi-FI 7 for an ultra-smooth internet browsing experience. It also gets stereo speakers to deliver an immersive media experience. A rather small 6,400mAh battery for a tablet with 66W fast charging support keeps the whole package alive.
Huawei’s new tablet will be available to buy in Spruce green, Obsidian black, and Snowy white colorways. The company will offer the device in three different editions, including the standard edition, MatePad Mini Reading (Paper+Ink) variant, and a Collector’s Edition.
Pricing of the new slate starts at 3,299 Yuan (around $460), and goes up to 6,499 Yuan (approx. $910) for the most high-end Collector’s edition. Huawei isn’t planning to launch the new tablet outside China any time soon.
