Early-stage site work has gotten underway on a new 23-story tower in Boston for Northeastern University, reported the Boston Business Journal. A mixed-use property that will accommodate 800 student beds along with academic space and community space, the building at 840 Columbus Ave. will replace 500 beds in Fenway.
In early August, developer ACC began remediation and is concurrently obtaining final permits for vertical construction. The university expects the paperwork to be completed in the next few weeks.
The project’s expected completion date is 2028. The Business Journal reported that it will help fulfill Northeastern’s longstanding commitment to the City of Boston to deliver 1,000 net new student beds, promised in the university’s 2013 Institutional Master Plan.
BLDUP reported that the new beds will address student housing preferences and enable Northeastern to return some of the student housing properties embedded in Fenway to the open market.
