Huawei played it smart. While the company is no stranger to the foldable phone scene, the sanctions placed against it by the US government meant that it had one less (and extremely important) market to compete in. So, instead of banging their heads against the wall, Huawei opted to do something different: launch a phone with a triple foldable display. And now, it looks like the company is gearing up to launch its successor. Thanks to a new post, the launch date of the Huawei Mate XTs has been revealed.
Huawei Mate XTs launch date revealed
In a post on X by Abhishek Yadav, he shared what appears to be a teaser poster image for the upcoming Huawei Mate XTs, along with its launch date. The post says that Huawei will officially announce the phone on September 4. This is a day before IFA 2025, and also a few days before Apple takes the wraps off the iPhone 17.
But we might not need to wait until next week for the full reveal. Richard Yu, the Chairman of Huawei Consumer Business, actually shared a video on Weibo where the Mate XTs in a white finish were fully revealed. It also shows Yu using the phone with a stylus, presumably the M-Pencil.
The announcement is set to take place a day before IFA 2025, and also a few days before Apple takes the wraps off the iPhone 17. Huawei is definitely trying to capitalize on the attention before the news cycle starts focusing on Apple’s new flagships. Unfortunately, we haven’t really heard much about the rumored specs of the phone. However, it shouldn’t be too surprising.
Since Huawei is essentially cut off from a lot of US tech, it had to find its own solutions. The company has been working with SMIC, a semiconductor manufacturer in China, to create chipsets for its devices. This means that it is almost a guarantee Huawei’s next triple-screen wonder will not feature a Qualcomm or MediaTek chip.
We’ve also heard rumors that the Huawei Mate XTs could be cheaper than its predecessor. We’re hearing it could launch with a price tag of $2,000. For a bit of context, the original Mate XT was priced close to $3,000. This means that while the XTs is cheaper, it is still a good chunk of change.
The original triple-screen foldable
Huawei honestly surprised all of us when it announced the Mate XT. By then, we had seen phones with foldable displays in both tablet and flip form factors. However, Huawei really pushed the envelope with the Mate XT’s triple foldable screens.
Our initial hands-on left us pretty impressed. One of the main reasons is because of the triple screens allowed the device to unfold into a more familiar aspect ratio. Early iterations of Samsung’s foldables gave us an odd aspect ratio that felt more square than rectangular. This made it awkward when watching videos, which weren’t exactly designed with square screens in mind.
