Foldable phones don’t look like they’re the easiest devices to repair. The fragility of the foldable display itself makes tearing it apart kind of iffy. However, it seems that Samsung has made some improvements. In a recent teardown video of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, YouTuber JerryRigEverything noticed some changes that could make it easier to repair.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 teardown video
In his teardown video of the Galaxy Z Flip 7, the YouTuber noticed that Samsung has been listening to its customers. The phone has retained the use of removable batteries. In earlier Samsung models, the company relied on glue to keep the batteries in place. This made the repair process a lot more difficult.
However, with the Flip 7, Samsung has opted to continue using a removable battery design. It also appears that both batteries in the phone have pull tabs. This is designed to make the removal process easier.
Also, the YouTuber notes that Samsung continues to use Philips head screws throughout the assembly of the phone’s components. This means that as long as you own a Philips head screwdriver, you’re good to go. This is unlike how Apple’s iPhones continue to use pentalobe screws, whose screwdrivers aren’t as readily available.
Lastly, the teardown reveals that components disconnect relatively easily, or to quote JerryRigEverything, it “unplugs just like a little Lego.”
There are still challenges
That being said, while Samsung has retained some internal designs that make removing certain components easier, it’s still not the easiest of repairs. In the video, the YouTuber points out how the foldable display consists of many layers. He notes that removing the flexible screen is near impossible.
He also points out that Samsung has inlaid glass inside the aluminum frame, which makes prying off the outer display tricky. This is because there is little to no gap to slip a razor blade between them.
So, what does this teardown mean? Should you buy the Galaxy Z Flip 7 based on it? If you’re looking for a powerful foldable phone, by all means, go for it. However, repair can get tricky, so you’ll want to make sure you take care of it. Based on past repair costs, we doubt the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will be a cheap endeavor either.
