At the latest Made by Google event, the search engine giant has finally announced Gemini for Home, an all-new, more powerful AI assistant for your smart home devices. As the name suggests, the new upgrade for its smart home ecosystem products has a new assistant powered by Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence. It will eventually replace the existing Google Assistant on Nest smart speakers and displays.
Google’s Gemini for Home assistant will provide hands-free control over various functions, including smart lights, audio playback, setting times, answering queries, and more. The company says the new assistant is both more powerful and easier to use than Google Assistant, which the company introduced nearly a decade ago.
Gemini for Home is way better than Google Assistant at assisting with daily tasks
In a blog post, Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer at Google Home & Nest, mentioned that Gemini for Home is way better at assisting with daily tasks. It utilizes the advanced reasoning, inference, and search capabilities of Gemini’s most capable AI models. Users will still use the hotword “Hey Google” to kick off their interaction with the new assistant. However, the interactions will be fundamentally new from what Google Assistant currently offers.
The new assistant will work across all your smart home products and for every member of your family, as well as visitors. The company said that it will replace the “rigid commands” in Gemini for Home with “more nuanced or complex requests.” The new assistant can accurately respond to more complex requests, such as “turn off the lights everywhere except my bedroom,” or “set a timer for perfectly blanched broccoli.”
Furthermore, the new assistant will be better at creating lists, calendar entries, and reminders. It will allow for more conversational interactions without the requirement for repeatedly uttering the “Hey Google” hotword. For example, you can use commands like “How can I keep raccoons out of my backyard at night?” or “given weather, crowds and hotel prices, what’s the best time of year to visit the Greek islands?”
Launching in October in both free and paid versions
Google is planning to launch Gemini for Home in October and will replace Google Assistant with it over time. The company will offer the new assistant through an early access program with both free and paid versions. As of now, Google hasn’t detailed the pricing of the paid plans. Google also teased a new speaker that could be powered by this new software.
It appears that Gemini for Home is Google’s response to Amazon’s generative-AI-powered Alexa Plus assistant. Amazon’s offering is already available in millions of households. We’ll have more details about Gemini for Home’s exact launch timeframe later this year, so stay tuned for regular updates.
